Local Foods

One of the Alliance’s four main pillars is Local Foods. We are always looking for ideas and ways to increase access to healthy local food for county residents.  Greenbrier County’s agricultural potential is bountiful and yet many of our local people, especially seniors, do not regularly have access to fresh local produce.

This year the Alliance worked with local farmer’s markets and the Greenbrier County Committee on Aging to establish a sustainable gleaning project that added fresh local produce to the  meals served at senior centers and “meals on wheels” across the county. We gleaned donations from the Lewisburg and Alderson Farmer’s Markets from July to September. Take a look at some of the beautiful and delicious donations that our seniors enjoyed this year!

We gleaned over 129 pounds of food!

Thanks to some of our generous local producers who donated!

  • Dogwood Hill Farm

  • Francis Smith

  • Glory Be Acres

  • Azimuth Organics

  • Sunset Berry Farm

  • Bill Whipple – Nutty Buddy Collective

  • Sally Hurst

  • Bootstraps Farm

  • Rainbow Farm

  • Laurel Creek Farm

  • Sunset Berry Farms

We hope to expand the gleaning program to include more farmer’s markets next year. Eventually we would like to encourage donations any day of the week! We are building up to that eventual goal.
